Emails from God

So you are sitting in your living room one day. It occurs to you that there has to be a better way. Everyone is arguing about separation of church and state, which religion is right, if God exists, who to vote for, how to save spotted owls, which charity they should donate to, and whether to shop at Wal-Mart. How is a sane person to figure it out?

Ask the one who knows.

Not me. I have an idea, but I certainly won't say I KNOW. Ask God. Whether you believe in God or not, you can ask Him to guide you to Him. Why would you? Well, it is sort of like Pascal's Wager. See http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/pascal-wager/ for more information on that.

Let's say God doesn't exist. All those billions of believers in some sort of higher power are just a result of natural selection where believing in God is a benefit to survival. Or maybe belief in God is hard-wired into our brain, which is pretty much the same thing. The afterlife doesn't exist, and this is all we have. Our life on earth. Birth to death. Altruism doesn't make sense to me if God doesn't exist. If the best way for me to spread my genes is my survival, then I am going to lie, cheat, steal, kill, sabotage, and do whatever else I need to do to survive and procreate. I'm not going to lay down my life for the "survival of the species" because then my gene pool dies out. Yet something prevents this from happening. We don't have this kind of survival of the fittest. It is more like "survival of the mostest" if you will. Something seems to transcend our individual need to survive. Something makes suicide, murder, and incest taboo across cultures. A cultural template from which all cultures start. I also have a hard time believing that the universe "just happened" and have read some very interesting "proofs of the existence of God."

Obviously there is more to the whole atheist argument than that, but let's look at the other side. One reason some find it easy to not believe in God is because trying to believe in God is very confusing. If most people in the world believe in some sort of higher power, whether it be the Goddess, Allah, Unknowable Creator, or whatever you call it, why doesn't anyone agree about what that power is and how to worship or acknowledge it? Many people do believe in some higher power, but don't have any specific form of religion to which they adhere. If you do believe in God, where do you go from there?

I see a few options. You can believe that each religion worships that higher power differently, and that whatever they want to do is okay. The "all paths lead to God" approach. Or you can believe that all other paths are wrong, and you have found the only correct one. You can believe that there are many different gods, and that Allah is different from God who is different from Brahma. Or you can believe that however you define your relationship with your creator is okay, that a specific religion isn't required. You can believe that God exists, but you don't need a relationship, thank you very much. How do you sort through these?

How can we decide that we don't need to adhere to a specific system of beliefs to worship God? I guess we could say that if God said it, but that would require determining what God said and getting His okay. Otherwise, you are making the decision, not God. I think we'd have to determine if God did have a specific system for us before choosing that path.

With so many religions to choose from, how do we choose? With many names for God or Goddess and many ways to worship, some of which are seemingly mutually exclusive, how is one to choose? And why is there so much confusion?

I believe it is because of a concept called "progressive revelation." There are two easy places to see this in action. One is the Bible and one is the Koran. How would God communicate to us? He doesn't send emails. He doesn't write books. He doesn't hold press conferences. He does, however, communicate with a chosen person, who then passes that message on to us.

Do we listen? Some do, some don't. People have a hard time hearing someone say that they've been talking with God and have a new message. So people choose to ridicule and persecute the person and cling to their cherished ways. The people who have the most to lose are the clerics and priests of the previous religion who are vested in holding to the old ways. Each messenger of God is persecuted for their teachings. It repeats throughout history.

Think about it. As a third-grade child, you listened to and loved your third-grade teacher. Then it was time to go to fourth-grade. It was painful, because it was new and you may have felt that by liking your new teacher you were disrespecting your old one. But that third-grade teacher wanted you to move on and progress. I believe that religion is the same way. God chooses a messenger who gives us a lesson for that particular time in human history and evolution. Then mankind evolves and matures and needs a new lesson. There is an eternal element of these religions, an element that is always the same. Moses gave us ten commandments. When Christ was asked which were the most important, he said to love God and love your neighbor. The Golden Rule is taught in all religions. Love God, love your neighbor. There are teachings that change as we change. The social teachings of each messenger of God change because they are what is needed at the time.

Anyone for using Occam's Razor here to shave away the extraneous confusion?

It becomes much easier when you can see that there is one God. That makes sense. Is it easier to believe that a pile of brick became a house spontaneously or that someone built it? Is it easier to believe that our universe just happened despite all the coincidences that would have to have occurred or is it easier to believe someone was behind it? Is it easier to believe that most of the world believes in a higher power because one exists or because they are all deluded the same way?

If there is one God, it is easy to explain the confusion by believing that He has one religion. It is one constantly updated religion and God doesn't leave us alone. The religions are more alike than different when you look at their core beliefs. When men get involved and add their interpretations and veils, it becomes confusing. That creates sects and schisms, each like the tributary of a river. God sends a messenger to renew His religion because it has become too distilled and needs to get back to the source.

So in a nutshell, I believe that there is one God, one religion, and one human race. What could be simpler?

One word about calling God Him. God transcends gender, and unfortunately English doesn't. Since common English usage refers to Him, that is what I use. I don't believe that God is a man, or that men are favored when we use the word "him" for God. We were all "created in God's image" which obviously doesn't mean we all look like God. We are created in His spiritual image. We all have virtues and a spiritual side which it is our responsibility to develop. We also have a material, human side. Our body. But that is a topic for another day.

Two cents from an anonymous commentor on the west coast...

Maybe it isn't about which God(dess) is the True One. Maybe the question is why are so many (dare I say a majority) of worshipers of all religions hypocrites?

Yes most if not all religions teach the Golden Rule and love and respect and caring but when it comes to practice it seems only a minority are able to live by these guidelines. The message from all of these religions doesn't seem to be getting through. And what is even worse is that it appears that the most devout followers don't even see their own hypocrisy. What's up with that?

My perception is that clergy are more interested in building God's domain here on earth and not trying to live a good life and enter His domain at the appropriate time, their physical death and transcendence to the Beyond. Maybe their own power and wealth is having a negative impact on their faith.

Does humanity need God to tell us how to act? Does it take divine revelation to teach that if you don't like it when somebody hits you or steals your stuff that maybe they would feel the same way if it happened to them? Is the simple joy of helping somebody in need not enough or do we also need to "reward" of heaven to commit caring acts?

I must admit to liking the concept of progressive revelation but I'm not sure it is The Answer any more then the Answers that have come before.

First, if the message of Love has been said before and it didn't take does saying it again hold any promise? The concept of Love is not new nor very complex. Humanity seems unable to embrace Love on a large scale nor for any serious length of time. Anybody remember famine in Africa? It's still there and now there is AIDS too but our rock bands aren't selling AID albums and schools aren't sending supplies and the US is too busy fighting an idiotic war to help the millions in need. Would a new messenger from God telling us to Love one another AGAIN change things?

Second, if God loves His children why does he send one messanger every now and then knowing that nothing really changes? Is He still trying to get things right? If He is all powerful then maybe he should tell each of us what the story is because all of his prophets have failed so far.

Third, will more rules bring us closer to God? Is not loving Him, one another and ourselves enough? Why must we eat fish on Fridays or not eat pork at all or praying while facing towards one place on earth multiple times each day? A deeper quesion might be did God create us so he would simply have worshipers and is He simply changing the rules trying to find out how to get as many followers as possible?

This has turned into a very negative post and for that I apologize. I consider myself a spiritual person but find religion to be filled with hypocrisy. God's messages always seem to be twisted and turned by people. It seems that most of us are on some type of spiritual path and trying to answer questions about God and I respect anybody who has found what works for them as long as they live a decent life. I do not need a messenger from God to tell me what that is. For me it is honor one's self, honor those around us, honor the world in which we live. If I can do this I hope that Deity sees how I honor His creation and I win the big prize.

May He She & They bless the writer and readers of this blog. May we find mutual Understanding, Peace and Love through discussion.

One other anonymous reader's thoughts as discussion in response to Two cents from an anonymous commentor on the west coast...

"Maybe it isn't about which God(dess) is the True One. Maybe the question is why are so many (dare I say a majority) of worshipers of all religions hypocrites?"

Response: No one is perfect..people have different capacities for controlling the passions of self and ego. Some certainly are prone to following the dictates of their minds and ego vice requirements of the Divine Will. Just because one claims adherence to a faith as you well know does not mean they are going to follow the requirements of that faith and few follow all aspects of their faith to the letter as in my view such requires absolute detachment from the self. But many try.thus to say a majority of worshipers of all religions are hypocrites is in my view overkill. To say all worshipers of all religions do so imperfectly is accurate and those who are truly hypocritical and follow not the essential teachings of their faiths, are they really worshipers of that faith? Or just pay lip-service to it and in reality are followers of the dictates of their selves? If they follow the dictates of self.I don't call them sincere worshippers.

"Yes most if not all religions teach the Golden Rule and love and respect and caring but when it comes to practice it seems only a minority are able to live by these guidelines."

Response: I think differently, again no-one is perfect and everyone has their moods, moments of weakness etc.but I would argue that most people of faith or who look to moralistic philosophy with a serious eye are decent and those of faith who take the teachings of the founders of the great religions seriously, despite imperfections in practice, do treat others with respect and dignity. If the opposite was the case, society could not function and despite ignorance and bad things that certainly happen, thinking in the arena of global consciousness, racial and gender equality, respect for law, love of education, practice of virtue, the strength at the global level of anti-violence thinking, an increase and greater interest in inter-faith and ecumenical activity, etc. is certainly on the rise. Any society even under the most utopian of circumstances will have requirements of law necessary to deal appropriately with those who choose to follow dictates of self.any society must have law because there will be humans who choose self over others in their day to day actions.

"The message from all of these religions doesn't seem to be getting through."

Response: Though at this stage in human evolution, many have veered away from the teachings of the founder's of their religion, and despite many problems in need of correction in our global society, the message of the great religions is seeping through. Everywhere I go (and I travel a lot) people treat me with respect, dignity, kindness, love, gentleness, humility, forbearance, patience, etc.most people with decent intent reflect attributes of the Divine however imperfectly.

"And what is even worse is that it appears that the most devout followers don't even see their own hypocrisy. What's up with that?"

Response: Most of the great religious doctrines do teach free will. Man can choose to follow the teachings of the Divine or can choose to follow their selves. The greatest battle in life is the battle with the self.every human being on earth has this battle.even those who pour into scripture daily! Even the most erudite religious scholars fail at times to win the battles with the self. Out of this battle with the self comes the concept of nobility of character. Without hypocrites and followers of the self, there would be no nobility or purity. Humans have choice though God gives them the tools to follow His requirements.

"My perception is that clergy are more interested in building God's domain here on earth and not trying to live a good life and enter His domain at the appropriate time, their physical death and transcendence to the Beyond. Maybe their own power and wealth is having a negative impact on their faith."

Response: Yes.many clergy today and in the past have gone astray chasing their own passions instead of following the dictates of the Divine. Such has it been since the dawn of history and even in the far future when the world is a much different place and the generality of mankind looks on us in this time as we do on monkeys, even then, there will be humans who will follow their passions.thus even then there will be the need for laws and its enforcement. Humans will make evil choices.always.

"Does humanity need God to tell us how to act?"

Absolutely.all the morality, the good, the excellence of humanity originates from the teachings of the Divine. Even those who don't necessarily acknowledge the Divine are still influenced positively. Study of the advance of any civilization shows this.the laws towards social good can be traced in all cases to Divine inspiration and teaching. Without revelation mankind would cease to exist.

"Does it take divine revelation to teach that if you don't like it when somebody hits you or steals your stuff that maybe they would feel the same way if it happened to them?"

Response: Everyone is different and has different capacity to absorb spiritual truth. Some acquire knowledge innately, some require the hard facts laid out before them. Some without explicit instructions from the Divine sources would literally lead purely selfish lives and not care about the Golden Rule or better yet instead of the Golden Rule.to treat others BETTER than we would ourselves like to be treated.

"Is the simple joy of helping somebody in need not enough or do we also need to "reward" of heaven to commit caring acts?"

Response: Those who innately get joy from helping others, such discussion of reward is maybe unnecessary, alas in this world due to the unfathomable variety to be found in human nature, there are those that trying to get them to recognize the higher good of feeling good for doing good is not going to get them to do good.therefore informing them of punishment and reward for bad or good acts is necessary to get them to conform. Fear of God is necessary just like with children fear of parental authority is necessary. If a parent does not discipline their children, generally children will go astray. The concept is the same with God.He lays out his teachings and gives us choice to follow or not, though He does say there are consequences either good or bad for following His or not following His dictates.

"I must admit to liking the concept of progressive revelation but I'm not sure it is The Answer any more then the Answers that have come before."

All the Divine physicians of the past offered perfect tools for the betterment of human civilization and human character at the time and place of Their advent. That does not mean that humans followed them perfectly.in many cases decidedly imperfectly if at all while making claim to following them..again free choice and will for humans is a constant.they can choose to follow or not. The answers for Divine civilization were always there and are here now.humans have to choose to follow them. I argue and believe that when the generality of humanity turns towards Baha'u'llah's teachings and follows them to the best of their abilities, the Kingdom of God on Earth as prophesized in the books of the past will be realized.yet even then some humans will make bad choices.they will still be human.

"First, if the message of Love has been said before and it didn't take does saying it again hold any promise?"

Response: Absolutely.humans must constantly be reminded to love. God never leaves man bereft of His requirements and as the centuries roll along and interpretations of scripture give way to the gospel of self, man must be reminded. Even in my own life, if I don't constantly remind myself of the requirements of Our Lord, I stray in thought. As we are spiritual beings, we must recharge ourselves spiritually, constantly, especially in this torn world society.

"The concept of Love is not new nor very complex."

Response: In my view.the concept of Love is constantly renewing and is hugely complex.yet paradoxically simple also. Depending on one's spiritual capacity, intellectual capacity, investigative capacity, emotional capacity, etc.the meaning of love, how it synthesizes in one's day to day life is constantly evolving or devolving, building and rising to new heights or disintegrating. Love's complexity can be gleaned when one begins to examine the myriad levels of it ranging from simple human love whether of friends, relations etc.romantic love, love of the Divine, love of a parent to child, love for humanity, etc..it is hugely complex.yet simple.Think.how easy is it to love one who hates you and is in your face about it? This is a requirement of the Divine.is it easy or simple to execute? Many cannot do it if they are not spiritually equipped even if they desire to live up to the requirement intellectually. Is it easier to hate an enemy or love one? Very complex indeed.

"Humanity seems unable to embrace Love on a large scale nor for any serious length of time."

Response: Too Generalized a statement when dealing with the immense complexity that love can be. There are many who give in to the dictates of self and cannot love.yet those who love the Divine, and choose to follow His will, find love easier to embrace for lifetimes!

"Anybody remember famine in Africa? It's still there and now there is AIDS too but our rock bands aren't selling AID albums and schools aren't sending supplies and the US is too busy fighting an idiotic war to help the millions in need. Would a new messenger from God telling us to Love one another AGAIN change things?"

Response: Yes.it has.though the global consciousness of many humans is stunted to be sure, I would argue that never in the history of humanity have humans been as globally conscious as they are now. The proliferation of Non-governmental organizations, the international charter of human rights, the continued increasing legitimacy of international arms control treaties and non-proliferation treaties (imperfect yes but better than 30 years ago), the generally global recognition that organizations like the UN have a good purpose despite its inherent flaws, etc..as a Baha'I I argue that Baha'u'llah's advent has changed things significantly though most of humanity does not yet consciously recognize it.

"Second, if God loves His children why does he send one messanger every now and then knowing that nothing really changes?"

Response: Though elements of humanity will always make bad choices, every messenger of God has brought about HUGE changes. One only has to look at the spiritual vitality of Israelite, Roman and Byzantine, Zoroastrian, Islamic, Chinese (Buddha) and now the emerging global civilizations (Bab and Baha'u'llah) compared to those locations and peoples pre-advent. The science, learning, moral teachings, enlightenment, excellences of civilization, all of it are attributable to the Messengers of God. They brought amazing changes. Take a look at the world just in the last 100 years!!! No changes?

"Is He still trying to get things right? If He is all powerful then maybe he should tell each of us what the story is because all of his prophets have failed so far."

Response: By sending His Messengers, yes, He is living up to his bargain with man that he will ensure the answers towards spiritual perfection are with us.He still gives us free choice to choose to follow or not.but if we do follow, we are meeting His wishes and we will get it right though it will be a trial and error process and an evolutionary one as well.

"Third, will more rules bring us closer to God?"

Yes.rules come in two forms..the essential and the accidental. Essential teachings are those that are timeless.that all the messengers of God transmit and renew.the accidental teachings are those necessary for man at a particular place and time and will be abrogated by another messenger or can be at a later date.

"Is not loving Him, one another and ourselves enough?"

Response: Loving God is being obedient to Him. To say you love Him and yet follow your own dictates is not enough. Loving one another is not enough.as humans have free choice..many will not choose the route of love.plus love itself can become bad if not tempered by other virtues. Blind love can lead to error. Take a look at divorce rates in America to see the truth of that.many fall in love without ascertainment of their interest's character.

"Why must we eat fish on Fridays or not eat pork at all or praying while facing towards one place on earth multiple times each day?"

These are requirements levied by God on men at particular times and places to meet the needs of those at that time and place.

"A deeper quesion might be did God create us so he would simply have worshipers and is He simply changing the rules trying to find out how to get as many followers as possible?"

Response: Another constant in man is change.man is evolving, maturing, civilization is advancing.the rules are placed for our protection. Yes God created us to love and worship Him.but he gives us free choice because he has also created virtue and nobility etc.we can choose to be what he wants us to be or not.

"This has turned into a very negative post and for that I apologize. I consider myself a spiritual person but find religion to be filled with hypocrisy."

You are correct.in that many who claim to practice or even many times who do practice religion are filled with hypocrisy.they are human and this will never change...i say true religion advances civilization.if it fails to advance civilization and the human spirit then it is not religion no matter one's claims.it is then superstition. The teachings of the founders of the religions when followed, advanced not detracted.

"God's messages always seem to be twisted and turned by people."

Response: Yup, this has always happened and always will.

"It seems that most of us are on some type of spiritual path and trying to answer questions about God and I respect anybody who has found what works for them as long as they live a decent life. "

    Response: A nice thought

"I do not need a messenger from God to tell me what that is. For me it is honor one's self, honor those around us, honor the world in which we live. If I can do this I hope that Deity sees how I honor His creation and I win the big prize."

Response: Some nice sentiment here but I don't agree. Without a messenger of God.you are bereft of Divine wisdom and would absolutely go astray.mankind cannot survive without His Messenger's.
